Stainless Steel Profile Market in Early August

Release time:

2026-08-06

Entering August, the stainless steel profile market presents a picture of "weak current conditions, strong expectations." In the first half of the month, rigid downstream demand showed a slight month-on-month improvement, with engineering-related orders outperforming manufacturing sector demand. On the supply side, mainstream steel mills maintained strong willingness to hold prices, limiting downside room for spot prices, though upward momentum also lacks support — overall sentiment remains stable.

1. Raw Materials: Nickel Volatility Eases Cost Support

Recent LME nickel has trended weak and volatile, with Shanghai nickel tracking downward. The softened nickel market has slightly reduced cost support for profile producers, with some traders reporting slower raw material procurement and rising buyer caution. In the ferrochrome market, August bidding prices held steady with limited room for movement. Overall, raw material dynamics offer limited upward price push in the near term.

2. Spot Market: Bar & Wire Rod Steady, Section Steel Softer

By product category, 304 bar prices in both Wuxi and Wenzhou floated around 14,200 and 14,150 CNY/ton respectively with minimal movement. 304 wire rod in Dainan rose modestly by 50 CNY/ton to 15,050 CNY/ton, supported by low inventory. 316L bar maintained its high plateau at 28,500 CNY/ton. Section steel (angles and channels) in Wuxi hovered around 15,035 CNY/ton with flat transaction volumes and extended order cycles.

3. Downstream Bright Spots: Anti-Slip Grating & Screen Mesh Active

Despite the overall muted market, two niche segments stand out. First, accelerating urban renewal programs — old parking garage and pedestrian anti-slip retrofit projects have kicked off in multiple cities — are driving marginal growth in stainless steel anti-slip grating bars, with inquiry frequency improving versus Q2. Second, industrial filtration upgrades continue, with water treatment and fine chemical sectors maintaining steady procurement of customized wedge-wire screens and perforated plates. Some producers reported sequential monthly improvement in August versus July.

4. Export: Modest Resilience Remains

On the export side, Southeast Asian infrastructure demand provides some support for stainless profile exports, with producers noting stronger inquiry activity from Vietnam and India than from Europe. However, FX volatility and trade barriers continue to cap upside potential for export volume growth.

5. Outlook: Mid-August Is the Key Observation Window

Overall, current stainless steel profile market floor support remains intact, but upward elasticity awaits verification. If raw material costs soften further, steel mills may face the choice between holding prices or cutting output. Should urban renewal and industrial retrofit projects accelerate, spot prices could receive staged support. Close attention should be paid to mainstream steel mill list price movements — especially from mills like Tsingshan — and changes in downstream operating rates.
