Off-Season Pressure Mounts, but High-End Stainless Steel Profile Wire Export Orders Show Resilience

In mid-to-late July, China's stainless steel profile wire market continues its off-season consolidation pattern with subdued overall trading activity. However, high-end custom products and export orders are demonstrating notable structural resilience.

1. Raw Material Cost Floor Clearly Established

Nickel futures edged higher in mid-to-late July, providing a cost floor for stainless steel raw materials. Mainstream 304 stainless steel wire rod ex-factory prices stabilized near 15,400 CNY/ton, with 316L raw material quotes at 30,500 CNY/ton and fluctuations contained within 200 CNY. The arrival of additional Philippine nickel ore shipments has limited upside momentum, while continued weakness in ferrochromium partially offsets nickel price gains. Production costs for stainless steel profile wire are caught between "resistance above and support below," with little probability of a one-sided price move in the near term.

2. Domestic Spot Market Diverges in Off-Season; High-End Custom Products Buck the Trend

The current period falls within the traditional off-season for metal processing industries, with demand for conventional profile wire in construction and hardware segments remaining weak. Wholesale markets are dominated by small, scattered purchases with overall subdued turnover. However, niche high-end segments show clear divergence: orders for triangular wire for lithium battery filtration, V-shaped wedge wire for water treatment, and precision profiled wire for medical devices continue to grow steadily. Precision products manufactured in compliance with the national standard GB/T 43856-2024 (General Technical Requirements for Stainless Steel Wire with Special Cross-Sections) have seen order volumes increase 32% year-on-year.

Factories in the Dainan and Wenzhou production hubs have broadly adopted a strategy of "cutting standard wire output while expanding high-end custom capacity." Leading enterprises have reduced 300-series profile wire scheduling by 8% to 12% month-on-month, while capacity utilization for high-value-added 316L and 904L profile wire remains above 90%.

3. Exports Surge Sharply; Emerging Markets Become Primary Growth Driver

According to customs data, total domestic stainless steel wire exports for January through April 2026 grew 253.74% year-on-year, with the profile wire sub-category posting an export growth rate exceeding 260%. Concentrated rollout of infrastructure and water treatment projects in Russia, Indonesia, and Southeast Asian RCEP countries has driven sustained increases in inquiries for anti-slip triangular wire and grating-complementary profile wire, with FOB quotes for 304 profile wire running in the 2.4–3.6 USD/kg range.

EU and North American markets are experiencing a seasonal softening, with ordinary profile wire orders declining somewhat, though demand for precision profiled wire in medical and new energy applications remains stable. Notably, concentrated domestic capacity additions have intensified low-price competition, driving export unit prices down approximately 13% year-on-year and continuing to squeeze margins for small and mid-sized processors.

4. Outlook: Phased Recovery Expected in August

In the short term, stainless steel profile wire prices are expected to track raw materials in a narrow range, with 304 standard profile wire prices likely to hold in the 15,200–15,700 CNY/ton band. Downstream manufacturers and overseas procurement agents are expected to enter a concentrated restocking cycle in late August, which should produce a phased pickup in market activity.

Over the medium-to-long term, the industry is accelerating its shift toward high-precision, corrosion-resistant custom profile wire. New energy, environmental water treatment, and biopharmaceutical sectors will continue to drive demand for high-end wire products, while competition in the commodity-grade profile wire segment is set to intensify further.
